Nakki Lake

Nakki Lake is the main lake of Mount Abu formed at the heart of the place, in the Aravalli Range. This is the largest manmade lake, stretched over an area of around half a mile and is around quarter of a mile wide. The lake is beside a dam and is about 20-30 feet deep. Local tribes consider this lake to be a holy one and they worship the water.

Myths Surrounding the Nakki Lake

Many ancient myths do the rounds, surrounding the Nakki lake of Rajasthan. As per legend, this lake was dug by the fingernails or “nakh” of an old saint named Balam Rashiya, who fell in love with a beautiful teenage daughter of the king. Her parents gave a condition that the old sage has to dig a lake with his bare hands before day break, in order to win the hands of their daughter in marriage. They thought that this task was impossible to achieve. But this strong willed sage was almost successful in his endeavour and was on the verge of completion, when God preponed the day break time, thus helping the king’s daughter. While by another myth the same story goes, but the groom was Bashkali Rakshash (a wicked demon).

Attractions in Mount Abu

Small green hills and beautiful gardens enclose the lake with the famous “Toad Rock” lurking from one of its sides. This rock resembles the position of a toad who is about to jump in the water. Tourists can climb up the rocky hill side to reach this rock. Artificial steps have been made from one side of the Nakki Lake for people to reach the Toad Rock. 

The tourism department has arranged for boat rides on the lake. Different types of boats like Shikara, Pedalo and Gondola are available for a leisure ride on the calm rippling waters and among the cool breeze. Around Rs 50/- to Rs 100/- is required for a 30 minutes enjoyment. Various other evening activities are present over there like pony ride and other kids ride for families to enjoy. The evening setting Sun completes the canvas.  

One can walk down to this lake or take an auto to reach this place. Situated almost at the town centre, this lake is surrounded by many good budgeted hotels and the main market is only a few minutes away. This has made this area quite crowded all the time.
